The NH Governor is intentionally the weakest governorship in the USA. The President of the NH Senate is a more powerful position (which is unfortunate given that we have a Statist in that position at the moment  Tongue )

The Governor cannot authorize more than a few thousand dollars' expenditure, nor can he make any political appointments, without the approval of a majority of the 5-person "Executive Council", who are also elected.

Quote
The Executive Council advises the Governor on all matters and provides a check on the governor's power. New Hampshire is one of the few states which has an Executive Council and the state whose council has the most power. While the Governor retains the right to veto legislation from the New Hampshire General Court and command the New Hampshire National Guard, the Council has veto power over pardons, contracts over $5,000, and nominations.

What is required to get elected to the executive council?

Popularity.  Ray Burton won reelection over here despite the strong democratic tide.  He's popular, apparently.  He's a staunch Republican, not really pro-liberty (e.g. voted for the elimination of tokens).

I'm in as rep number eight for Goffstown, but it was a squeaker, numbers seven and nine were both Dems. Still the opportunity to be a voice for liberty in Concord is another small step in the right direction. A persistent message can change minds over time, if it's the right message. I like the thought of being in a position to point out the poor choices the Dems routinely push onto the voters, but you can't really blame them for their ignorance if they've never been told anything different.

Cal is a registered Republican. He, like myself, is also a former Director of Research of the NH Liberty Alliance.

Awesome, I want to run as a Republican someday, but I need to learn the language government uses during sessions and learn how to translate what a bill means and what it might violate, etc.

This is a good place to start and ask questions.  Also read the papers and NH based news sites (www.nhinsider.com -self promoting plug!)

Another good way to learn is to show up at the meetings.  Running for local office is also a good way to get into the mix and local office in most towns can be done without tying you to any party.
